Saving Lives during Black History Month

Saving Lives together during Black History Month 2009

The National Blood Service would like to encourage Black African, Black Caribbean and South Asian communities to give blood and help meet the need for rare blood types within ethnic minority communities.

Statistics for blood donation show a situation in need of much improvement; currently only 1% of active blood donors are from combined Black African and Black Caribbean communities.

And because of this, particular types of rare blood groups found only in Black communities are in great demand. Sufferers of Sickle Cell Anaemia for instance, prevalent within the African and African Caribbean communities, need regular blood transfusions.

There’s also a great need for blood for day-to-day use. Every day, blood donations save the lives of babies, mothers in childbirth and people having operations or suffering from medical conditions.

Almost anybody between the ages of 17 and 65 can donate. There is no health risk, most people find it relatively painless and you can donate blood every 16 weeks. New needles are used for each donor, it only takes about an hour to give blood and after a few minutes rest you can be on your way.

Together with the National Blood Service’s VIP Appeal, the public get a chance to become a ‘Very Important Person’ and make a difference in their local community by registering to give blood. You can do this online at www.blood.co.uk/VIP or by calling 0300 123 23 23.

Quincy Single Mum

OtherPosted by necdaf Wed, September 23, 2009 14:31:53

21st Oct...

An incredibly funny, poignant & powerful story. Sometimes it's hard to be a woman. This is something that Quincy is more aware of than the average man.

Following the death of his wife he had no option but to become both mum and dad to his kids.

He's a big, tough geezer who was raised with the rule that anything more than a five-second hug with a person of the same sex, even your dad, is gay, but this
experience has nonetheless helped him to become awfully comfortable with his feminine side.

Quincy radiates love and admiration for his children with a sensitivity that other comics can only dream about. The show is full of amusing stories that will leave you with a serious case of the warm and fuzzies

Suzanne Chong

ExhibitionsPosted by necdaf Tue, September 15, 2009 15:09:21

1st October…

The Biscuit Factory Autumn Show 2009 showcases 14 pieces of Suzanne Chong's brand-new works and some of her previous works. (until 22nd November)

Limited edition prints of Suzanne's selected works are available for sale.

Originally from Hong Kong, Suzanne Chong is a UK-based fine artist and arts educator. She received her Chinese art and teacher training in Hong Kong and then her degree in Fine Art and Master’s in Museum Studies from Dundee and Newcastle universities respectively. Suzanne’s work responds to Eastern and Western morals and the complexities this brings to female identity.

The juxtaposition of Chinese and Western symbolisms form Suzanne’s coded autobiography, which explores a struggle between traditional propriety and the liberation of Hong Kong-Chinese women’s accepted

roles as good daughters, wives and mothers.

Although Suzanne’s work is mainly inspired by her Hong Kong-Chinese background, her work opens up a conversation with women from different cultures.

Seckou Keita Quintet

MusicPosted by necdaf Tue, September 15, 2009 15:07:44

1st October…

Seckou Keita Quintet

With a big African heart, virtuoso Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita and his international quintet are not to be confined to any one genre, dipping comfortably in and out of jazz, classical, flamenco, with sometimes hints of rock and reggae. The twenty-one stringed African harp - the kora - takes the lead, with support from double bass/electric bass, percussion, violin and vocals.

My Native Vale

MuseumsPosted by necdaf Tue, September 15, 2009 15:05:44

1st October…

My Native Vale (Until 8 November)

This is the first in a series of shows which engages the public in an exciting debate about British art. Focusing on the work of 19th century locally born artist John Martin, artists Simon and Tom Bloor create a new installation using printmaking techniques. Visitors are invited to contribute to the artwork and in the process explore how important birthplace is in defining identity.

The TWAM Outreach team will be working with a group of asylum seekers and refugees on this project.

The Great British Art Debate is a partnership project between TATE Britain, Tyne & Wear Archives and Museums, Norfolk Museums & Archaeology Service, Museums Sheffield and InIVA. The Great British Art Debate is supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, and by the Renaissance – museums for changing lives.
